The Penny brothers – Mark and Jonathan – grew up in the West Midlands but have travelled far and wide. This – their first novel – became a contest to see who could create the funniest characters/dialogue/storylines, and it won’t end there: their rivalry lives on.

It may be wondered why The Golden Pig is divided into “parts” instead of chapters. The answer gives some small insight into how the book came into being in the first place. It all began, more years ago than we care to remember, as a game of sibling rivalry to see which of us could create the most exciting and outrageous plotlines, the most believable yet quirky characters and the funniest dialogue and gags. We took it in turns to write a part then, when inspiration had deserted us, posted the story so far to the other to add the next part. Only when the book was complete did we review the manuscript to iron out the numerous inconsistencies, dead-ends and longueurs. Thus the structure had, and still retains, a meaning for us which chapters never could.
